Stuff matters: Exploring the Marvelous Materials that Shape Our Man-Made World
This book is an extremely well written material science book. It has enough information that it could be a textbook, but all the writing is in the form of stories, so it is easy to follow and fun to read. Mark tells the story of glass, where it came from, why it is important. He explains the properties that give glass it's distinctive harness and clarity. He explores why these properties are so useful to us, all through stories. My favorite chapter is on chocolate. Why is chocolate so amazing? How does it melt in our mouth with so much flavor? Why does chocolate from different countries taste different? Each chapter goes into a different material and what makes that material remarkable. This book will give you a new appreciation for the material world that we experience every day! I highly recommended this book to anyone who has wondered what it is like to work in a top secret lab, how fillings for teeth with cavities work, or why plastic is used for so many different things around us.
